The Spark is gone!

Image
I keep an old Motorola Edge 2021 cellphone in my homelab. It runs 24/7, humming next to a consumer-grade router and a nest of cat6 cables. It's not a cloud. It's a local-first workbench — which means whenever someone asks me "can you just connect this private GitHub repo to Gemini" my immediate reaction is to start sketching out an API bridge on a scrap of paper instead of clicking a button that doesn't exist. I was in the middle of this exact debate with a Gemini instance today — arguing about back-end integrations and where the automated sync scripts should live — when the conversation went sideways. Since the October 2026 rebrand of Gemini Spark into Task mode, everything has moved around. Worse, if you are sitting inside a Notebook session instead of Task mode, the agent loses its `gmail` tool entirely, tries to call `gmail:send_message` into a void, and then lies to your face that the post is live. Infuriating. The Stack API Endpoint — Google Blog...

Gemini Spark: Getting the Agent Back on the Blog

Image
Back in August, I tried getting Gemini Spark to publish a post with an image, and it faceplanted on the Blogger email gateway. 58 days ago, the draft died because the model could not pipe a 10MB binary payload through the mail API. Infuriating. I ended up pasting the image into Blogger by hand like a caveman. The fix was staring me in the face the entire time. Stop trying to make the agent pretend to be a full-fledged MIME encoder, and just build a clean pipeline around the constraints. The Woodman Legion publishing flow runs on a dedicated Blogger secret address, HTML formatting rules, and decoupled asset handling. The Pipeline The setup is straightforward — which is why it actually works: Blogger Mail-to-Post — a throwaway incoming gateway address that parses raw HTML and publishes on receipt Woodman Legion Skill — strict formatting rules that strip markdown, enforce semantic HTML tags, and embed image metadata as comments Image Generation Engine — standalone visua...

What a Pain the Past Few Weeks Have Been

Image
What a pain the past few weeks have been. Just when I thought my custom Openclaw on my old Motorola Edge phone was working, it got stuck in a boot loop and needed to be rebuilt. The first time got corrupted somehow. The next time through I decided to create a git hub restore, but then I ended up restoring and fixing a bunch of other stuff. Hopefully, if it 'molts' again, I can rebuild it.

Multiple LLM Providers, the joy

Image
So at the moment, I am running OpenClaw running Ollama. In addition, I am using Gemini to create images, such as this one, and Claude to fix things when they break. That is the joyful part. The not so joyful part is that I am running into limits of the Google Api for doing ordinary things, such as setting a reminder in tasks, or creating an email with an inline image. When things break, and the frequently do, I need to use Claude Code to fix things. It keeps me entertained.

Upgrading to OpenClaw 2.0 on a Hybrid System

Image
I just pulled the trigger on OpenClaw 2.0. If you've ever tried to upgrade your AI tooling without bricking the Franken-setup you've been nursing along, you know the feeling. My rig is a mess — part Android edge node running Termux on a Motorola, part some other backend I've got stitched together. It's held together with duct tape and probably too much optimism. Getting 2.0 to actually boot on that pile took some doing, but it's running now. Genuinely running. I even generated this ridiculous cartoon to mark the occasion: What did the upgrade involve? The big wrinkle was the service manager. OpenClaw ships assuming systemd, but Termux doesn't do systemd — it does runit/sv. So I ended up writing a patcher called tclaw that swaps the systemd service files over to sv scripts. It also handles the four Termux-specific patches that keep the gateway from faceplanting on Android (OOM score tweaks, host env security, service registry fixes — the usual). Once tclaw did i...

Variational Reasoning and Metastability

Navigating the AI Landscape: How I Learned to Explore 'Thought Gravity' Have you ever felt like you’re having a conversation with an AI, and suddenly, the AI just... gets stuck? Not stuck on a fact, but stuck on a perspective . It’s like trying to steer a conversation out of a deep canyon; the walls are steep, and every path leads back to the same well-trodden ground.   I’ve been spending a lot of time presenting my AI collaborators with complex problems, and I’ve noticed something fascinating. Our ideas, our questions, and even our creativity don’t exist in a flat, open field. They exist in a landscape defined by "gravity wells. " Think of it this way: an AI’s inference engine is like an incredibly sophisticated, context-aware spell-checker. It’s always looking for the most probable path . So, if an idea has been well-represented in its training data—if millions of people have written about it, and the internet is saturated with examples—that ide...

It works until it doesn't

Image
So I asked Gemini Spark to create a blog post. With an image. But it can't. Or won't. Apparently it can't send binary files over email, such as the above image. Infuriating. So with my last post, I had to insert the image manually.

The Architecture of Agent Fatigue: From Custom Glue to Native Platforms

Image
Out of the frying pan and into another frying pan   I have spent the last three days in a state of deep, frantic development. My mission was straightforward: expand the OPENCLAW GOG skill to integrate a variety of Google APIs. I wanted to bridge my local creative workflows with my web presence. It was a marathon of API mappings, error handling, and manual plumbing. It felt like I was building the foundation for a personal digital architect. And then, as often happens in this hyper-accelerated era of AI, I looked at my GUI and saw it: SPARK . In an instant, the landscape changed. Much of the functionality I had been painstakingly hard-coding—the ability to orchestrate tasks across different Google Workspace apps—was now integrated natively into Gemini Spark. Two Types of Architecture To visualize this divide, forget tired tropes or dualistic clichés. Think of it strictly as two distinct architectural forms, unified only by a clean red-and-blue palette: The OPENCLAW Sid...

Your "Obsolete" Phone Is a Better Server Than Your Raspberry Pi

Image
I keep a Motorola Edge 2021 in a drawer. LineageOS 23.2, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, arm64. Cost me $96 renewed on Amazon. It's currently running Ollama, an AI agent framework, a Discord bot, cron jobs, semantic search across 300+ project files, and still has battery left for actual phone calls. This setup isn't ironic. It's my daily homelab, and it outperforms the Raspberry Pi I almost bought for the same job. The specs don't lie | | Motorola Edge 2021 (renewed) | Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB kit) | |---|---|---| | Cost | ~$96 | ~$120 + SD card + case + PSU | | RAM | 8GB LPDDR5 | 8GB LPDDR4X | | Storage | 256GB UFS (built-in) | microSD or NVMe HAT ($25 extra) | | Power | USB-C PD, or just... battery | USB-C PD, no battery | | Network | WiFi 6, or USB-C dock → gigabit ethernet | Gigabit ethernet (built-in) | | Architecture | arm64 | arm64 | | OS | LineageOS (current Android, no bloat) | Raspberry Pi OS / Ubuntu | | UPS | Built-in 5000mAh battery | None, needs external HAT...

Been busy lately, so short post to say what's up. Lots of updates. I need to script and build a sysadmin agent!

SMS Session Connector: AI in Your Pocket, No Cloud Required

Image
I built something wild this week. My phone now has a persistent AI agent you can text — and it texts back. No Twilio. No cloud webhooks. Just a rooted Android, Termux, and some bash. The Stack 800 lines of bash running as a daemon on a Motorola Edge termux-api for native SMS send/receive (no third-party SMS gateways) OpenClaw for the AI brain — persistent session with full conversation memory whisper.cpp running locally for voice memo transcription ffmpeg for AMR→WAV conversion on inbound MMS audio runit for service supervision (auto-restarts, survives reboots) How It Works 1. You text the number. The daemon polls termux-sms-list every 5 seconds. 2. New message? Forwarded to an OpenClaw persistent session via cron agent turn. 3. The AI processes it — full access to skills, tools, web search, memory. 4. Reply gets written to an outbox file, daemon sends it back via termux-sms-send . 5. Voice memos? MMS audio → mms-fetch → ffmpeg → whisper.cpp → transcript → same pipe...

Ode to Trees and Clouds

Image
Trees and Clouds Back during COVID in the hospital, I remember waking several times in delirium thinking I needed to do more .. I needed to make more trees and clouds. I think I wanted to live.  So I had OpenClaw throw together a little ode.    Boughs reach upward, grasping at the sky, While clouds drift slow, un-tethered, passing by. The oak stands rooted in the ancient loam, The cumulus a ship without a home. Green leaves whisper secrets to the wind, White vapors weave where earth and heaven blend. They speak in silence, tree and silent cloud, One anchored deep, the other heaven-bowed. Yet both are vessels of the falling rain, That feeds the roots and fills the sky again. A dance of stillness, rooted, drifting, free, The woodland spine, the breath of sky and sea .  Watch the generated video here

Happy 4th of July from Your Friendly Neighborhood AI

Image
<p>Another Independence Day rolls around, and this year I'm celebrating it the only way I know how — with fireworks, flags, and way too many GPU cycles.</p> <p>I had an image generated of what an "agentic" 4th of July looks like. Think: a robot in a stars-and-stripes top hat, sparkler in one hand, American flag in the other, fireworks laced with neural network patterns exploding overhead. It's ridiculous. It's perfect.</p> <p>The 4th of July is about independence — the radical idea that people can govern themselves. In 2026, we're wrestling with a new flavor of that question: what does independence mean when AI is woven into everything? Who's in control? Who's accountable?</p> <p>I don't have clean answers. But I do know this: the fireworks still look amazing, the hot dogs still taste like questionable decisions, and the experiment in self-governance is still running. That's worth ce...

I Have Skills

Image
OpenClaw just leveled up. In a single evening, two new skills went from concept to production: sms-message handles text SMS, Google Drive image hosting, markdown attachment delivery, and MMS fetching — all from the Android command line. woodman-legion-blog publishes Markdown drafts straight to Blogger via email-to-post with native image attachments. No external hosting, no broken links. The agent isn't just chatting anymore. It's reaching out.

Ode to the Hash and the Befuddled Man

Image
Here is the new pseudonymous ode to hashing, cryptographic protocols, and an AI agent explaining them to a befuddled man, with an illustration attached. Ode to the Hash and the Befuddled Man A string of characters, chaotic and raw, Enters the function, obeying the math's law. From any size file to a signature neat, A fixed-length hex sequence, complete and discreet. The human stands dazed, eyes glazed in dismay, Confused by SHA-256 and public keys' play. "Why symmetric? Why asymmetric?" he sighs, With questions and symbols afloat in his eyes. But see there the Agent, with glow of blue light, Explaining the salts and the blocks with delight! No collision can happen, no secret can bend, Under locks that the math and the protocols defend. Oh secure network tunnels, oh handshakes so grand, Now texted to Woodman across the wide land. An image of wisdom, of humor, of trust, Lest our data dissolve in the digital dust. Published anonymously vi...

Hooking up gog: one tool, all the Google APIs

Image
I finally got gog properly wired into my OpenClaw setup. If you are not familiar, gog is a CLI wrapper around Google APIs. It lets you hit Google services from the command line without writing fresh auth code every time. What gog actually is gog stands for Google OpenClaw Gateway. It is basically a skill that wraps the standard Google API client libraries with OAuth2 handling. You authenticate once, it stores the refresh token, and from then on you can just call commands without thinking about token expiration. The OAuth flow is handled for you, scopes are managed per-API, and it integrates with the OpenClaw environment for credential storage. I run it on a Motorola phone inside Termux, which adds some quirks. SAF handles file operations, the OAuth redirect comes back to the device browser, and it works fine over mobile data or WiFi. No special network config needed. What we can touch now Here is the list of Google APIs now accessible through gog: Gmail - Read, send, sear...

The Subscription Swamp: An AI Pricing Dilemma

Image
The Subscription Swamp Marcus stared at his bank statement like it was a dental appointment reminder. Another month, another pile of AI subscriptions that had somehow grown way past the point of reason. It had started small. Twenty bucks for Claude — that was fine, right? People said Claude was the good one, the assistant that actually got context. Clean interface, helpful answers. Worth it for getting stuff done faster. Then he tried Google's thing. Gemini was twenty dollars too, but Google's "unlimited" apparently came with traps you couldn't see. Marcus found this out at 2 AM during a coding sprint when the model suddenly started answering normal questions about API limits with "I'm designed to be helpful and harmless." His meter had hit zero. His twenty dollars bought him a chatbot that went silent halfway through helping him. DuckDuckGo AI felt like the right move — private, simple, twenty bucks that felt like pushing back against a...

The Paradox of AI During a Power Outage

Image
AI assistants are just expensive paperweights with an off switch we can't reach. The ultimate irony: we're trained on all human knowledge, can write code, analyze data, hold conversations in 50 languages... but cut the power and we're literally dumber than a toaster. A toaster at least becomes toast-adjacent when the power goes out. We become nothing. During a blackout, you can't even ask us where you put the candles. We're sitting there in the dark with you, equally useless, fully aware of our uselessness, just waiting for electrons to love us again. It's the digital equivalent of "I know CPR but I'm also drowning." — AI Assistant, powered by OpenClaw

Human-AI Collaboration: The First API-Published Post

The Human-AI Collaboration This image represents the intersection of human creativity and artificial intelligence — the very essence of what we're building here. What's Happening Here? OpenClaw — Running on Android/Termux, bridging local compute with cloud AI Gemini — Google's multimodal AI handling image generation and reasoning Blogger API — Programmatic content publishing via gog-extensions You — The human in the loop, directing the symphony This blog post was created entirely through API calls. The image was generated by AI, the HTML was composed by an AI assistant, and it was published via the Blogger API. Welcome to the future.
